What Type Of Plastic Sheeting Can Be Used To Build Haunted House Walls?

The black plastic sheeting used to create DIY Haunted Houses and build out commercial-size haunted attractions is a fire-retardant polyethylene material compliant with fire safety regulations that apply to temporary structures. It may look like regular poly or plastic sheeting, but you can’t see its ability to self-extinguish.

Americover has been supplying the haunt industry with black fire retardant plastic sheeting since 1995. We are proud to provide a fire marshal-approved product that increases public safety. Create a Halloween experience for your community worthy of a horror award and one that won’t get shut down before you’ve had a chance to make them scream.

Why does the black plastic sheeting for haunted houses have to be fire retardant?

Plastic sheeting is naturally combustible. So, it can easily catch fire, and it will burn fast. Fire retardant plastic sheeting has additives to slow the rate at which the plastic burns and allows it to self-extinguish instead of continuously fueling the fire.

There is often a lot going on in a haunted attraction that could easily cause a fire, from extension cords to animatronics and special effects. One tiny spark can cause devastating and irreversible damage. That’s why before you can open your haunted house to the public, a fire safety marshall has to perform an inspection.

This compliance standard stems from the unfortunate events that unfolded at the Six Flags Haunted Castle in 1984, in what was supposed to be a temporary structure. See more in this video published by the NFPA.

How do I know if my Haunted House Plastic is Fire Retardant?

At Americover, we include our fire certifications with your purchase to show your fire inspector. Despite having the appropriate certificate of compliance, they may want to conduct a field test to ensure the plastic sheeting behaves as expected when exposed to flames. Their test might include taking a sample of the material to burn with the expectation that it will not catch fire and that it self-extinguishes after removing the source of the fire.

Non-fire retardant materials will burn quickly and continue to burn, which is why they can be a hazard in your haunted attraction. We do not recommend you try and test the products yourself because it’s unsafe, and your inspector will know what to look for.
