Copycat Arctic Circle Secret Fry Sauce Recipe | CDKitchen.com (2024)

The Arctic Circle is a fast food restaurant based primarily in the western US. They are known for their Angus beef burgers, fried halibut, and their famous "secret" fry sauce. However, it's not so much a secret when you can make it yourself with this copycat recipe! You can use whatever amounts you like, just use equal amounts of each ingredient. Or, if you like a stronger flavor of one of the ingredients feel free to adjust it. This sauce is great on french fries of course but it's also good in place of mayo on a sandwich or as a dipping sauce for other fried foods.

ingredients

mayonnaise
buttermilk
ketchup

directions

Combine equal parts of the mayonnaise, buttermilk, and ketchup in a bowl. Mix well until it is uniform in color.

Use immediately or store in a covered container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

recipe tips

If you're using the sauce as a salad dressing, you might want to thin it slightly with a bit more buttermilk for easier pouring.

Allowing the sauce to chill in the refrigerator for an hour before serving can help the flavors meld together more fully.

To keep the sauce fresh, make sure your mayonnaise, buttermilk, and ketchup are not close to their expiration dates before mixing.

For a healthier option, consider using avocado mayonnaise or another alternative mayonnaise product.

Try adding a small amount of mustard or Worcestershire sauce.

Try adding smoked paprika or chipotle powder.

If you enjoy a bit of tang, add a splash of pickle juice or apple cider vinegar.

Try different types of ketchup, like spicy or flavored varieties.

Label the container with the date you made the sauce to keep track of its freshness.

Always stir the sauce before using if it has been stored in the refrigerator, as separation may occur.

common recipe questions

Can I use low-fat mayonnaise and buttermilk in this recipe?

Yes, you can use low-fat mayonnaise and buttermilk to make a lighter version of the fry sauce. The texture and flavor might be slightly different from the original, but it will still be delicious.

How can I add a spicy kick to the fry sauce?

To add a spicy kick to the fry sauce, you can mix in some hot sauce, cayenne pepper, or finely chopped jalapenos.

Is there a dairy-free alternative to buttermilk that I can use?

For a dairy-free version, you can make your own buttermilk substitute by mixing equal parts of a dairy-free milk (such as almond, soy, or coconut milk) with a little lemon juice or vinegar. Let it sit for a few minutes to thicken before using.

Can I add other flavors to this sauce?

Feel free to experiment by adding other flavors such as garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, or relish to customize the sauce.

How should I store the leftover fry sauce?

Can I make this sauce in a larger batch?

Yes, you can easily make a larger batch of this fry sauce. Just make sure to maintain equal parts of the mayonnaise, buttermilk, and ketchup, or adjust according to your preference for a larger quantity. Remember, the storage time in the refrigerator remains the same.

What else can I serve with this fry sauce besides french fries?

I grew up eating Arctic Circle Frys with Arctic sauce and the closest to the original is 2/3 Miracle Whip to 1/3 catsup, that is the ratio. You can mix in the above additions stated by the other commenters, my family likes this mix and say it tastes close to the original fry sauce

My husband and I were a management team. Pickle juice was used in the burger sauce but not the fry sauce.

I'm 75 and a Utah native. For years my friends and I tried to duplicate Arctic Circle's fry sauce. This buttermilk version is very close. The only thing missing are the tiny red specs throughout the sauce. Those little red specs are bits of paprika. Not enough paprika to flavor the sauce. Just enough to have little red flecks showing up throughout. Back in the day when each Arctic Circle made its own sauce the employees did use juice from the gallon size dill pickle jars.

I ate Arctic Circle since 1970, in Longview Washington. Woo Hoo. I live in Texas now, so thanks for the recipe. I ranked it pretty close to 3-Clowns Burgers but they closed. So AC is right up there for grunge-burgers. Cap'n Yobi's is perhaps almost as good.

As a life long Utahn, 40 + years, for those that don't know, Arctic Circle is a Utah based Burger chain that started Fry sauce. Here is my recipe. Equal parts Mayo and Ketchup. Half cup Mayo, half cup ketchup. A couple tablespoons of Buttermilk. Two to 3 TBSP of pickle juice. I havemore elaborate versions that add garlic powder and onion powder, just no the time.

I use less buttermilk to make it thicker and use it on burgers. I've also used it in coleslaw instead of plain mayo! Gave it quite a yummy kick.

Also A/C hamburger sauce is great. 1 part ketchup, 8 parts mayonnaise, onion powder, garlic powder, white pepper, and a bit of buttermilk to thin if needed.

We don't use equal parts of all three, use equal amounts mayo and ketchup then thin to desired consistency with the buttermilk. We use it as a dipping sauce for fried shrimp.

I don't know what arctic circle is but this sauce is awesome on burgers! Even good for dipping fries in.
