Easy Stress-Free Valentine’s Day Mailboxes for the Busy Mom

Recently, I saw a friend of mine post a question on FB—”Where can I find a pre-made Valentine Mailbox box for the school Valentine’s Day exchange?”
I was stunned!

Pre-made Valentine Boxes! (That’s just blasphemous!)

But what shocked me even more were all the follow-up comments saying “following” or “me too”!

Valentines day is supposed to be about love and friendship and most importantly…HAVING FUN, people!!!

You can’t BUY a Valentine’s Mailbox!

And in an age with perfect Pinterest posts and tantalizing Instagram feeds, we forget that kids’ crafts should be made by kids.
They should be fun and simple, and a chance for kids to let their imaginations be free.

Don’t get me wrong….I COMPLETELYunderstand the pressures of modern parenting.

Most of us have 2 working households, we’re constantly rushing from here to there and barely have a second to breathe let alone create works of art after school. But creating the traditional Valentine’s Day box should NOT become a source of stress.

So I’ve put together a simple How-To for the Busy Mom followed by my Top 4 Tips for Stress-free Valentine Mailbox creation. These are things that I’ve been doing for the past 4 years and trust me, they work!

Steps to create your Valentine Mailbox:

Step 1: Cut an opening for the Valentines

  • Cereal Box: Cut away the lid from the top of the cereal box
  • Shoe Box: Cut a slit in the middle of the lid

Pro Tip: Use a tissue box, then you don’t have to cut an opening! #mindblown

Step 3: Make sure your child’s name is prominently on the box!

We layered some foam heart stickers to help her name stand out.

NOW–for the stress-free part…

My top 4 Tips to Keep Valentine’s Box Making Fun and Stress-free

1) Grab fun wrapping paper.

Choose something shiny or maybe even their favorite cartoon character. Wrap the box like a birthday present. Maybe add some cute stickers, and you’re done! The kids will like it because it has their favorite chacter or theme (ie: unicorns or emojis).

Pro Tip: Dollar Tree is a great place to find the shiny mylar wrapping paper.

2) Grab a variety of stickers to create more of an impact.

You can use foam stickers, puffy stickers, metallic stickers, etc. Combining or layering them will create more texture and blow-up the wow factor for kids.

3) Use materials that are easy to clean but still create an impact (to a child).

Let your child use their imagination. Give them materials that are easy to clean but still create an impact (to a child) ex:Glitter glue (instead of messy glitter) or shiny stickers or metallic mylar wrapping paper or maybe even glitter paper!

4) Let go and have fun.

Don’t get overwhelmed with trying to make a Pinterest-perfect themed box (ex: one shaped like dinosaurs or unicorns). (I know it’s easier said than done.) But remember–it’s all about the child’s imagination and having fun! Let your child enjoy the magic of making.

We’ve now been making Valentine boxes for 4 years, so trust me when I say…you’ve got this!
Just keep it simple, and have fun.
