Rebel Moon cast share hidden details in their costumes (2024)

Sofia Boutella and co-stars have shared some secrets from their Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire costumes.

The Netflix film is out in cinemas from today (December 15) and will hit the streaming service next week as the first chapter in a planned trilogy from director Zack Snyder.

Boutella leads the space opera as the warrior Kora, a former member of the evil Imperium military force who is now determined to bring them down with help from a band of rebels.

Kora has some large-scale fight scenes in Rebel Moon, so she admitted to Digital Spy she was worried how the choreographer would work with the cape and corset her character wears.

"I remember being terrified of wearing the cape, and for the cape to not wear me. How do you handle a cape?" she quipped. "I thought for some people it could just be for visual purposes. But really, for Kora, it's because she's the most wanted fugitive in the whole universe. So it was just a way for her to hide, and to hide with the hoodie. I like when a piece of costume has a purpose.

"And it's the same thing with the corset, for example. It could really define the silhouette, and it could be very aesthetic. But, really, it's because she's been beaten up, and her body is holding on one thread. So it's like she probably has back issues. That's to hold her together, basically. I like those details."

Kora isn't the only character with secrets embedded in her costume — E. Duffy's refugee warrior character Millius has some very unexpected inspiration.

"The costume designer, Stephanie [Portnoy Porter], was amazing," they said. "She sourced all the different pieces of Millius's costume from different places. I think there was an electrician's belt, and then there was some slingshot, a little ball-holder, on it. It was this crazy, pulled-together thing.

"You really do get the idea of, 'OK, this is a person on the move, taking what they can get. Totally DIY.' That totally informed the sense of the grassroots movement that I think the Bloodaxes had formed."

Staz Nair's ass-kicking blacksmith Tarak came from a completely different perspective, as his nudity is representative of the hardships he's faced.

"The costume that Tarak is wearing – well, how I imagined it is 10 or 15 years ago, when he had to feel his planet for the sake of the Motherworld, he probably was clothed," he recalled. "In fact, he was clothed. I don't want to give you anything away to you, but you get more of an insight to the backstory [in part two].

"To me, the nakedness isn't just there for aesthetic value. It's because these are the remnants of his past life – his planet. He holds these things dear to him, more than anything else in his world. This is him trying not to shed the proverbial skin of his past life."

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire is now playing in select cinemas and is released on Netflix on December 22.
