Pattern Design + Construction:

Crochet garlands and coasters are some of my favorite holiday crochet projects to design. They're a quick and easy way to add a handmade, affordable and festive touch of holiday décor to any space.

This free crochet pattern is super versatile! These crochet hearts are adorable hung as bunting over the buffet or mantle. I like to hang my crochet garlands in my cubicle at work for some festive cheer! They're also the perfect size for Valentine's crochet coasters or cute little gift tag accessories!

The basic stitches used in this pattern make this an excellent crochet beginner project. Each crochet heart is worked in flat rows of single crochet with the border added at the end. The finished heart measures approximately 3.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall. For the garland version, the hearts are strung together by weaving jute through the backs, but yarn or ribbon could be used for variation. One could easily make larger sized hearts by increasing yarn weight and crochet hook size.

Yarn:

For these crochet hearts, we'll be using medium (4) worsted weight yarn. I really enjoy using worsted weight yarn for most of my projects because of the versatility as well as availability in most craft stores. Worsted weight yarn also tends to come in very affordable brands. You can easily substitute other brands and colors as long as the ounces per gram are similar. I've used the following colors for the garland version of this project:

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color White

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Flamingo

  • Red Heart Super Saver, Medium 4, 7 oz / 198 g, in the color Hot Red

Heart Border:

We're going to create a border around the crochet heart to clean up the edges.

We've just chained 1 at the end of Row 13 and our hook is at the top left of the right 'hump' of the heart

  • Continue down the left 'hump' with 2 single crochet

  • Slip stitch into the center stitch we skipped on row 10

  • Continue to SC around the heart until you've reached the bottom point.

  • Chain 1 in between the two SC at the bottom point of the heart.

  • Continue to SC around until you've arrived back at the beginning of the border.

  • Slip stitch into the first stitch of the border.

  • Chain 1, tie off pulling through the chain stitch to secure.

  • Weave in any loose ends and trim any excess yarn.

Assembly:

If you're opting for the coaster version, you're finished! High five!

If you're opting for the garland version:

Using a tapestry needle and jute (or ribbon or yarn), string your finished hearts into a garland by running the jute through two points on the back top of the hearts.
